Red Cross assisting family displaced by fire
RAPID RIVER — Volunteers from the American Red Cross are assisting a family of seven — including five children — that was displaced by a home fire on U.S. 2 in Rapid River Friday.
The response to the fire briefly caused the Michigan Department of Transportation to close the westbound lane of U.S. 2 at Whitefish Lane around 10:30 a.m. The road was reopened to traffic shortly before 11 a.m.
“We’re providing the family with comfort and financial assistance for temporary lodging and immediate needs like food. And we’ll work with our community partners to identify next steps for this family as they begin their recovery,” American Red Cross of Wisconsin Communications Officer Justin Kern told the Daily Press.
