Delta County nears 900 virus cases

ESCANABA — COVID-19 cases continue to climb in the Upper Peninsula, but local hospitals still have space for patients — with or without the virus.

The Upper Peninsula had 4,413 confirmed cases of COVID-19, 753 probable cases, 74 deaths and four probable death linked to the disease, as of Tuesday according to state officials.

Delta County had a total of 886 confirmed COVID-19 cases, 141 probable cases and 18 deaths and one probable death; Menominee County had 548 confirmed cases, 79 probable cases and three deaths; and Schoolcraft County had 51 confirmed cases and three probable cases.

As of Tuesday, OSF St. Francis Hospital had six COVID-19 patients, two of which were in intensive care. When factored in with other patients, this brings the hospital to 62.50% of its bed capacity.

No COVID-19 in-patients were reported at Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital Tuesday.

UP Health Systems — which has hospitals in Marquette, Hancock and Ishpeming — had 19 COVID-19 in-patients, six of which were in intensive care. Dickinson Memorial Health Care System had four patients, three of which were in the ICU.

Not all COVID-19 cases result in hospitalizations.

Across the peninsula, Alger County had 75 confirmed cases, 23 probable cases and one death; Baraga County had 62 confirmed cases,12 probable cases and four deaths; Chippewa County had 66 confirmed cases and 44 probable cases; Dickinson County had 487 confirmed cases, 10 probable case and nine deaths; Gogebic County had 218 confirmed cases, 84 probable cases, one death and one probable death; Houghton County had 710 confirmed cases, 149 probable cases and seven deaths; Iron County had 349 confirmed cases, 33 probable cases, 19 deaths and one probable death; Keweenaw County had 17 confirmed cases and one probable case; Luce County had 32 confirmed cases and 11 probable cases; Mackinac County had 114 confirmed cases and 29 probable cases; Marquette County had 730 confirmed cases, 129 probable cases and 12 deaths; and Ontonagon County had 68 confirmed cases and five probable cases.

The state does not include infections or deaths within the Michigan Department of Corrections system in county-by-county counts.
