Horses seized at puppy mill

MAPLE RIDGE TOWNSHIP — As a police investigation into a Maple Ridge Township puppy mill continues, 18 horses were seized Tuesday.

The puppy mill was busted by police on Monday, Aug. 24. Initially, troopers from the Michigan State Police Gladstone Post had been sent to check on a horse in an area roadway. They discovered the puppy mill during their investigation. 65 adult dogs and 69 puppies were taken from the puppy mill by police, and the dogs are now being cared for at the Delta Animal Shelter.

On Tuesday, Aug. 25, troopers returned to the Maple Ridge Township residence where the puppy mill was operating and seized 11 miniature horses and seven horses. Several of the miniature mares were pregnant. The horses have been transported to a local boarding facility and will be evaluated by a veterinarian.

Troopers were assisted by volunteers from the Delta Animal Shelter.
