Delta County voters decide ballot issues

ESCANABA — Delta County voters weighed in on a number of millage proposals and a handful of races for political seats during Tuesday’s primary election. The results of these races and millage requestsd are as follows:

DELTA COUNTY

COMMISSIONER

DISTRICT 1

In the race to represent the Republic Party in the Novemeber General Election’s race for county commissioner in Delta County’s first district, John C. Malnar bested Gerard N. Tatrow. Malnar received 478 votes (52%) while Tatrow received 447 votes (48%).

The county’s first district inclues Baldwin, Bay de Noc, Brampton, Cornell, Ensign, Fairbanks, Garden, Maple Ridge, Masonville, and Nahma townships.

CORNELL TOWNSHIP ROAD MILLAGE

In Cornell Township, voters approved levying 1 mil ($1 per $1,000 of taxable value) for a period of five years, 2020 to 2024, inclusive, for the purpose of providing funds for road improvements in the township. The measure was approved with 73 votes in support (54%) and 63 against (46%).

This is the first time the millage will be levied. It will raise an estimated $23,775 in the first year.

ENSIGN TOWNSHIP FIRE DEPARTMENT MILLAGE

Ensign Township voters overwhelmingly approved the renewal of a 1.5 mill ($1.50 per $1,000 of taxable value) for the purpose of providing funds for fire purposes, the Ensign Township Fire Deparment, and equipment. It passed with 152 votes in support of the measure (78%) and 44 against it (23%).

The millage will be levied for six years, 2021-2026, inclusive, and will raise an estimated $47,107.32 in the first year levied.

GLADSTONE CITY COMMISSION

Two Gladstone city commissioners, who ran unopposed, appeared on Tuesday’s ballot. Greg Styczynski will continue to serve on the commission until Nov. 2, 2021, when his partial term ends. Judy Akkala will continue her time on the commission until her partial term ends on Nov. 7, 2023.
