Schoolcraft County Courthouse closed, put in lockdown

MANISTIQUE — The Schoolcraft County Courthouse was closed and put into lockdown Wednesday due to an ongoing investigation and situation, according to Facebook posts made by pages representing the county.

In a post from the Facebook page “Schoolcraft County,” County Board Chair Craig Reiter announced that the courthouse was closed for the day and put into lockdown. A comment on the original post made in the county’s name stated that an individual was targeting the courthouse and the Department of Health and Human Services office located there. As of about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, police were aware of the individual’s identity and were actively searching for him.

No county staff members were in the courthouse at the time of the lockdown. It was also stated that members of the general public were not at risk of harm.

A post to the Facebook page “93rd District Court” stated that matters on the court’s docket would be rescheduled as soon as possible and apologized for the inconvenience.
