Krusin’ Klassics canceled, fair prep ongoing

Next car show slated for 2021

ESCANABA — One major Delta County summer event has been canceled, but another is continuing full speed ahead. Krusin’ Klassics Fun Run won’t be happening in June. Meanwhile, the U.P. State Fair, which is held later in the summer, is preparing for its August opener.

The Krusin’ Klassics Car Club decided earlier this week to cancel the 2020 Fun Run Car Show and Swap Meet, including all 35 features and events planned, except the raffle that will take place on schedule.

“Due to the coronavirus we decided it would be safer for all involved to postpone it to next year,” said Krusin’ Klassics Car Club Vice President Terrie Belongie.

In all its 35 years the Fun Run has never been canceled.

“The entire show, including the theme “Rallying Through the Years”, will move forward a year to June 4 and 5 of 2021,” Belongie said.

Registration and the parade will be held June 4, 2021. The Fun Run Car Show and Swap Meet will be held in the Ruth Butler Building on the U.P. State Fairgrounds June 5, 2021.

According to Jeff Wood, facilities manager at the U.P. State Fairgrounds, preparations for this year’s fair are continuing.

“We are confident that when the fair starts on Aug. 17 the Upper Peninsula will be back to life the way it was before early March. We look forward to breaking another attendance record for the U.P. State Fair and hope attendees support our local Upper Peninsula businesses, especially in 2020,” he said.

The Krusin’ Klassics Car Club raffle will have a new twist this year.

Instead of the raffle being a prize raffle it will be a 50/50 raffle. Those who have already purchased tickets will be contacted and given two options — receive a full refund of the ticket price, or stay in the drawing for the 50/50 monetary prize. One person will win half the money and the other half will go to the club. No other prizes will be awarded.

In 1985 Belongie, her husband and other car enthusiasts gathered to share and celebrate classic and special interest automobiles in the Coyne Chevrolet parking lot on Stephenson Avenue in Escanaba.

“Back in the day, our kids were all young and it became a big family event. We gathered there two years and moved to the fairgrounds because so many people were interested,” said Belongie. “It started with 150 cars and grew to 650 cars … It took off really big.”

Belongie, who was the president of the club, said it takes Krusin’ Klassics members all year to plan the event.

“We hate to cancel the Fun Run, but it’ll be back next year,” said Belongie. “A fun event to bring people together while enjoying old cars.”
