Veterans service may get boost from grant
ESCANABA — A grant Delta County’s veterans service office applied for recently could fund major changes to veterans services in the county if the application is approved.
“We applied for the … fiscal year 2020 County Veteran Service Fund Grant through the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency,” Delta County Veterans Service Officer David Dziewior said.
The veterans service office requested $71,000 in funding through the grant, which it submitted an application for on Thursday, Feb. 20.
As part of the application process, Dziewior was required to explain how the funds requested by the veterans service office would be used to enhance or increase the office’s services.
“We had to tell them exactly what we planned to do with the money,” Dziewior said.
Dziewior said grant funds would primarily go towards expanding the center’s services and availability to Delta County’s veterans.
If approved, the grant could allow for the relocation of Delta County’s veterans service office. Dziewior has been working out of the veterans service office at the Delta County Airport for four years.
“We’re in communication with the building and grounds committee and with the county commissioners for a possible new location of the office with expanded services and personnel,” Dziewior said.
New employees at the office may include an additional veterans service officer.
Currently, the veterans service office is looking at various sites for a possible relocation.
“We’re reviewing potential sites in the Escanaba/Gladstone area, but no final decisions have been made yet due to the pending approval of the grant,” Dziewior said.
Dziewior said he is hoping to receive an official response on the grant application by the end of March.
