Snowmobilers killed in two U.P. crashes

ESCANABA — Two snowmobilers lost their lives in separate accidents in the Upper Peninsula Tuesday.

A snowmobiler was killed in a crash Tuesday in Manistique Township, according to the Schoolcraft County Sheriff’s Department.

Deputies were called to the crash on Trail 2 off County Road 448 at 12:30 a.m. Tuesday. It was determined the man driving the snowmobile had gone off the trail and hit a group of trees. He did not survive the crash.

Name of the victim and further information is being withheld pending the investigation and contact of family members.

The Schoolcraft County Sheriff’s Department was assisted by the Michigan State Police, Manistique Public Safety EMS, Burns Towing, and Faussett Family Funeral Home.

A second snowmobile fatality was reported in Chippewa County’s Whitefish Township Tuesday. Troopers from the Sault Ste. Marie Post were dispatched to investigate the crash on Trail 452 (Betsy River Road) near Wide Water Road.

The crash occurred at approximately 12:41 p.m. The preliminary investigation revealed the lone snowmobiler was traveling on Trail 452, lost control of his snowmobile, left the trail, and crashed into a tree.

The driver of the snowmobile was identified as Zackary Snider, 28, of Hart, Mich. Snider was pronounced dead at the scene.

Whitefish Fire and EMS and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources responded to the scene and assisted in the investigation.

The crash remains under investigation.
