Delta County Century Ride returns Sunday

GLADSTONE — Local cycling fans will be able to once again take part in a local tradition this weekend. The Delta County Century Ride will be held on Sunday.

Delta County Chamber of Commerce Assistant Director Sheila Krueger said participants in the Century Ride will get off to an early start.

“The scheduled start times are between 8 a.m. — 10 a.m,” she said.

However, riders will be able to begin at the first safe light.

The Century Ride will feature ride lengths of 13K, 40K, 78K and 100K. Routes will begin near the Gladstone Sports Park.

“New this year to the ride is the keepsake medal that will be awarded to participants who complete the 100K or Century,” Krueger said.

According to Krueger, riders will also be able to enjoy food from a variety of rest stops during the event.

“Rest stops will feature Little Red Caboose in Schaffer, Dobber’s Pasties in Flat Rock and the Brisket Barn at the John and Melissa Besse Sports Park Concession Stand,” she said.

On Saturday, Sept. 21 from 5 to 7 p.m., participants will be able to pick up their ride registration and have dinner during the “Bike and Binge” event at the Besse Sports Park Concession Stand.

“Participants will enjoy delicious Croatian chicken, corn on the cob, potatoes and a slice of pie prepared by Elmer’s County Market and sponsored by Visit Escanaba,” Krueger said.

She noted picking up registration at this time will allow people to save time on Sunday, which can be especially helpful for those planning to attend Sunday worship services.

Pre-ride registration will also be available from 7 to 10 a.m. Sunday.

With the Delta County Century Ride set to take place this weekend, local motorists are urged to be cautious during the morning and afternoon of Sunday, Sept. 22.

According to a public service announcement issued by the Delta County Chamber of Commerce, almost 300 bicycle riders are expected to take part in the Century Ride. The ride is set to begin near the Gladstone Sports Park on M-35 at 8 a.m.

Riders will be in the vicinity of the West Gladstone Bridge and the Days River area, near the Gladstone Area High School and Flat Rock. The route includes various county roads between Flat Rock and Schaffer, and will end at the sports park in the early afternoon. Drivers are asked to slow down and give cyclists enough room to ride during the event.
