Armed robbery suspect in custody

ESCANABA — A 42-year-old Milwaukee, Wis. man may be linked to the attempted armed robbery of the Northern United Federal Credit Union in Escanaba on July 5, according to authorities.

Escanaba Public Safety was notified Monday of another armed robbery of a bank in Lake Hallie in Chippewa County, Wis.

A Milwaukee man, 42, was arrested after leading authorities on a brief chase, officers said.

The suspect was driving a black GMC Acadia at the time of the robbery and his arrest. The same vehicle was described in two other attempted and armed robberies recently.

An investigation conducted by the Wisconsin authorities, Federal Bureau of Investigation and Escanaba Public Safety led the authorities to believe the suspect and vehicle in the Lake Hallie robbery are connected to anattempted robbery in Escanaba, which was already linked to another armed robbery in Pembine, Wis.

On the evening of Friday, July 5, Escanaba Public Safety responded to an armed robbery attempt at the Northern United Federal Credit Union. A 911 call reported a man dressed in black with a mask and a gun was attempting to gain entry to the credit union; doors had been secured for the closure of lobby business, but an employee was still inside.

The man was described as six feet, two inches tall and weighing between 230 and 250 pounds. He was wearing jeans, a black coat and a black hat/mask at the time of the attempted robbery.

The suspect vehicle was an older-model GMC Acadia, black or dark blue in color, with a sunroof.

On the afternoon of Monday, July 8, an armed bank robbery occurred in Pembine. The suspect in this incident was a white male of unknown age described as being between six feet, two inches and six feet, five inches tall, with a thin to medium build. He was seen wearing light blue jeans, brown/tan shoes, a dark-colored sweatshirt or jacket and a dark full-faced mask.

The suspect vehicle in the Pembine robbery was described as a dark-colored mid-to-late model GMC four-door mid-size SUV — possibly an Acadia — with silver-colored, five-spoke wheels.

On July 9, investigators from Escanaba Public Safety, Marinette County Sheriff’s Office, Delta County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan State Police and the FBI held a joint meeting and determined the attempted armed robbery in Escanaba and an armed bank robbery in Pembine were related.

The investigation is continuing and no other information will be released at this time, according to Escanaba Public Safety.
