Japanese woodblock printing workshop offered in June

The Lake Superior Art Association is sponsoring a four-day workshop featuring Japanese Watercolor Woodblock print artist and teacher Mary Brodbeck. The workshop will take place Monday, June 24 through Thursday, June 27 at the Marquette Arts and Culture Center, Peter White Public Library, Marquette, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.

Students will learn the traditional Japanese technique of Mokuhanga (wood print) and create your very own woodblock print. The workshop begins with a hands-on printing demonstration from prepared blocks using; water-based pigments, kento registration, and pressing with a baren – all hallmarks of this time-honored process that dates to 17th century Japan. The class will then move into designing, carving, and printing its own work with thorough demonstrations along the way. We will be carving on 9” x 12″ blocks (both sides) and the size of our image will be 7” x 10″. Examples from prior workshops will be shown. All adult levels are welcome.

The cost of the workshop is $300 for LSAA members/$325 for non-members and is limited to 10 students. Register by contacting Lynn at lsaainfo4u@gmail.com or call/message her at 906-399-9824.
