GLADSTONE — It’s full-steam ahead for the Gladstone Michigan Soo Line Steam Engine #730 Authority.

The Gladstone Michigan Soo Line Steam Engine #730 Authority met recently in front of the historic train engine to celebrate their completion of the process to become a fully exempt 501(c)(3) non-profit.

“This was an important step toward securing more funding and grants toward the continued upkeep and preservation to continue along the highway and to provide stability to the structure and surrounding grounds,” said According to Authority President John Pickard. “This non-profit status will let donors’ move toward a fulfillment goal and offer them all the tax advantages of charitable giving.”

Pickard went on to say that the Community Foundation for Delta County’s serving as the fiduciary fund manager for the group has been a blessing. Donations can be made to the day-to-day un-endowed fund or the long-term perpetual care endowment fund through the Community Foundation by sending payments to 2420 1st Ave South, Escanaba, Michigan, 49837, C/O Soo Line #730.

“We would like to marginalize city involvement and resources, but also to continue in partnership with our city and businesses. We hope that the community’s passion in support will help us champion our cause,” said Pickard.

That cause is the driving force behind the authority.

“My authority (members) are big believers in community history, importantly the Soo Line railroad that was the founding of Gladstone. Our hope is to make a big and lasting impact for generations to care about and be pleased with the results,” he said.
