Manistique girls, Gladstone boys track victorious in Emerald Invite

MANISTIQUE — The Manistique girls appear to be hitting their stride as they progress through this track and field season.

Manistique won for the third straight time here Tuesday by capturing its Emerald Invitational title with 124½ points.

The Emeralds, who won at St. Ignace and Rapid River last week, were followed by Escanaba 81½ and Gladstone 71

Gladstone squeezed past Pickford 128½-127 for the boys’ title. Third-place Manistique tallied 47 points.

The Manistique girls swept all four relays and senior Danielle Lund, who led off the sprint relays, won shot put at 33 feet, 9 1⁄4 inches and discus (103-0).

Junior Leah Goudreau added firsts in the 200-meter dash at 27.64 seconds and 400 (1:05.78).

“This shows were getting faster and stronger in each meet,” Emeralds’ coach Erik Mason said. “I’m proud of Leah for running a PR (personal record) in the 200 and a season-best in the 400 and very impressed with (sophomore) Maya Carlson running four miles.”

Carlson took the 3200 (12:59.88) and sophomore Kyra Carlson was runner-up (13:55.8).

PIckford sophomore Talya Schreiber copped the 1600 (5:42.22), followed by Maya Carlson (6:00.06) and Kyra (6:25.21), both of whom were part of the longer relays.

“I think we did well as a team,” Maya said. “After the 800 I didn’t think I’d have enough time to recover. I was pleasantly surprised with my 3200. This is the first time I ran four miles in a meet this year.”

Esky senior Sophia Wagner cleared 10 feet for the third time in pole vault during a rain shower and sophomore teammate Ava Stahlboeger took the 100 hurdles (17.44) and long jump (13-5 ½).

“I’m happy with that, especially considering the conditions,” Wagner said. “I started raising my leg up a little higher. I’m excited for Friday’s meet (Negaunee Lions Invitational). That will be a good test.”

Esky senior Adrianna Getzloff and Gladstone junior Kristy Karl shared first in high jump (4-10) and Karl won 300 hurdles (53.64).

“We did well,” Esky coach Dan DeLong said. “I thought Annabelle Neumeier ran well in the 800 (in a personal-best 2:42.32) and Ava took nearly a second off her time in the hurdles.”

Also taking an individual first for Manistique was freshman Aaliyah Sears in the 100 hurdles (13.68).

Gladstone senior Luke Bracket copped the boys’ 100 hurdles (15.33) and 300 (42.56), followed by four Pickford hurdlers in each race.

“I’m pretty happy with today’s races,” he said. “I had to stutter-step one or two which slowed me down a little. This was kind of like a practice meet, but it helps me out of Negaunee. This being a smaller meet made for a more relaxed atmosphere.”

Pickford senior Hayden Hagen, who won four events. was named athlete of the meet. He took the 800 (2:11.59), 1600 (4:47.36) and 3200 (10:27.2) and anchored the 3200 relay (8:58.25).

Sophomore Gunner Bennin added three firsts for the Panthers, taking the 100 (11.88), 200 (23.77) and 400 (55.78).

“We’re doing well in the running events, but we’re missing some kids,” Pickford coach Garde Kangas said. “We’ve been fighting some injuries. We have some good hurdlers. We’re young. We don’t have any senior hurdlers.”

Gladstone junior Aaron Hughes swept the weight events with tosses of 39-10 in shot put and 116-7 in discus.

Braves’ senior Eli Berthaume took long jump (18-8) and freshman Andrew Karl captured pole vault (10-6).

Manistique’s lone first took place in the 1600 relay (3:43.65).

“We didn’t do as well as we hoped,” Emeralds’ coach Cody Kangas said. “We didn’t have the right mindset going into this meet. Although, we still have a couple more meets to get things straightened out before the (Division 1) regional.”
