History Day Camp Sand Point Lighthouse

ESCANABA — Just how heavy is a bucket of water? How do you wash and dry clothes without an electric washer and dryer? What kinds of foods did kids use to eat? What was life like for children in Delta County a century or more ago? These questions and many others will be answered for participants in the Delta County Historical Society’s First Summer History Camp on Thursday, July 21.

Children ages 7-10 can sign up for the one day camp, which includes visits to the lighthouse and the museum as well as a chance to engage in the kinds of play and chores children experienced in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The campers day begins at 9 a.m. and ends at 4 p.m.

Registration for the camp is limited to 24 and preregistration is required. There is a registration fee. Registration forms can be picked up at the DCHS Museum from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. For additional information, contact Ellie O’Donnell at 789-9034. If there is no answer, please leave a message.

Cancer Alliance seeks donations for golf outing

ESCANABA — The Delta County Cancer Alliance Board has announced the return of the yearly golf outing fundraiser to be held Thursday, July 14 at the Escanaba Country Club. According to Alliance President Gayle DeShambo, the golf outing fundraiser has been on hold for two years due to COVID-19 restrictions.

To make this year’s golf outing a success, the Alliance is reaching out to the community requesting support for the event with golf registration commitments, donations, and sponsorships. Registration commitments will fill the course with golfers and community camaraderie, donations will allow golfers to try their luck with bucket raffles and silent auction treasures, and sponsorships will support making the event profitable to allow the Alliance to continue to help cancer patients.

Community support allows any Delta County resident who has been diagnosed with cancer to receive up to $800 in reimbursements per year to cover cancer related expenses, access to the loan closet of items one may need throughout their cancer journey, personal care items and nutritional supplements.

For questions or to make a donation contact Gayle DeShambo at 906-241-6689.
