ESCANABA — The General Federation of Women’s Clubs in Escanaba has been involved with the Michigan Adopt-A-Highway program since April of 1994. Saturday, May 7 was the start of their 28th year cleaning the highway.
GFWC chose to adopt three miles of M-35, beginning at the North End by Breezy Point Bar and traveling three miles south to the Ford River Bridge. The Michigan Department of Transportation’s Adopt-A-Highway program is a commitment for three cleanings a year. The first pick up was from late April to the first of May, the second pick up is in mid-July and the third is at the end of September.
MDOT supplies the GFWC club with trash bags and high visibility vests to wear. Depending on where the pickup is done and how many helpers are available, the pick up can range from an hour to three hours of more.
