Gladstone High School Class of 1969 Reunion
GLADSTONE — Members of the Gladstone High School Class of 1969 will hold their 50th-year class reunion on Friday Aug. 30 and Saturday, Aug. 31 at the Gladstone Yacht Club.
A Friday night meet-and-greet will be at 6 p.m. Saturday, cocktails will be served at 5 p.m., and dinner will follow at 6 p.m. Reservations can be made by contacting Laurie Kaufman at 906-428-4623.
‘Under The Radar’ stars coming to Escanaba
ESCANABA — On July 31 at 6:30 p.m., Tom Daldin and Jim Edelman of PBS Television’s “Under the Radar Michigan” will be at in the Escanaba City Hall City Council Chambers to discuss their show and share stories about their adventures. A book signing will take place immediately following the presentation, and copies of both “Under The Radar Michigan: The First 50” and “Under The Radar Michigan: The Next 50” will be available for purchase.

AAUW Hosts Sunday Soiree on Aug. 11
ESCANABA — Members of the Escanaba Area Branch of AAUW (American Association of University Women) will hold a “Sunday Soiree” at the home of Kathleen Bennett beginning at 4 p.m. on Aug. 11. The event will begin with wine and hors d’oeuvres, followed by a piano recital by Lani Hall Van Voorden. Van Voorden is a native of Escanaba who graduated from the Interlochen Arts Academy in 1973 and was awarded a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Cincinnati Conservatory of Music.
Van Voorden spent a dozen years in Europe, during which time she was employed by the Staats Opera in Munich, Germany, performed as a solo pianist for theatre and concert venues, recorded numerous classical and contemporary music pieces and provided music for several movies, including “The Old Man and the Sea” and “Silence of the Lambs.”
Upon her return to the United states, she continued her career of performing and teaching in the San Francisco, Calif. area. She is currently setting up a piano studio at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Escanaba, where she will welcome piano students at all levels — including beginning. Registration for classes will begin in the fall and more information may be obtained by emailing pianoslvv@gmail.com.
AAUW members are asked to make their reservations for the recital by calling 786-3415 no later than Aug. 9. Seating is limited and reservations are required. AAUW is open to men and women holding a associate degree of higher. Established in 1981, it promotes equity for women and life-long learning.
Manistique coat drive
MANISTIQUE — The Michigan State Police Manistique Outpost and Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital are joining efforts to help neighbors in need.
The public is asked to donate a new or gently-used coat to the Michigan State Police Manistique Outpost on Tuesday, Aug. 27, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. All donated coats will stay in Schoolcraft County to help those in need.
Christian Closet to close
ESCANABA — The Christian Closet of the Escanaba Church of Christ has been open for many years, and has enjoyed providing aid to the community by supplying clothing, food, and household items to monthly guests. The Christian Closet will be open for the last time from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7.
The Christian Closet is located at the Escanaba Church of Christ building located in Soo Hill at 5079 18th Road, Escanaba.
Toastmasters to meet
ESCANABA — Bay De Noc Toastmasters develops communication and leadership skills every Wednesday, except the last Wednesday of the month, at noon in the Penstar Building, located at 1431 N. 26th St. in Escanaba.
