According to Jim Brusoe of DePere, Wis., the Gladstone office — with Gladstone Branch Manager Tom Bolger — was located on the 1000 Block of Delta Avenue, next to the Rialto Theater and Empson Insurance. The boys are, kneeling from left, Vern LaPlant, Dean Bovin, Rex Aicher, and Harlan Cretens; standing are Joe Brusoe, Mel Bloomquist, Jerry Gagner, Bob Burton, and Herman LaFave. Brusoe said the cost of the Daily Press at the time was 35 cents a week (Monday through Saturday). The afternoon edition was delivered after school. The paper boys collected on Saturday morning, and some customers paid monthly and some weekly. “Scofflaws” (those who didn’t pay at all) were rare. Many of the paper routes stayed in the same family and were handed down from brother to brother. Routes consisted of 100-120 customers. Brusoe said, “It seemed like almost every household ‘took the paper.’”
