Olsons to celebrate 70th wedding anniversary

Dr. Carl and Marilyn Olson

CLEARWATER, Fla. — On March 24, Dr. Carl and Marilyn Olson will celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary at their home in Clearwater, Fla.

Carl J. Olson, originally from Dayton, Iowa, and Marilyn J. Molin, from Escanaba, met in Chicago, where he was a medical student at Northwestern and she was a nursing student at Swedish Covenant Hospital. After graduation, the two were married in 1951, at the Evanston Covenant Church, Evanston, Ill.

They arrived in Gladstone in 1953, where Carl joined Drs Dehlin and Key’s medical practice. Carl replaced another doctor with the same name and initials — Carl J. Olson — so Drs. Dehlin and Key did not even need to change the signage on their clinic entrance door. Eventually, George Maniaci joined the practice, and for many years the clinic was known as the Dehlin-Olson-Maniaci office.

During their 31 years in Gladstone, both Carl and Marilyn were very active in their community and church while raising their family. Carl served several terms on the Gladstone Area School Board as well as serving as chairman of the Evangelical Covenant Church for many years. Marilyn was president of the PTA, and very involved with the music program at church, acting as both choir director and church organist. Both enjoyed golfing and bowling in local leagues, and were avid supporters of Gladstone High School sports and music programs. Carl was a Gladstone Rotarian, and Marilyn a member of Gladstone’s Coterie Book Club.

In his role as Doctor Olson, Carl delivered over 3,000 babies at St. Francis Hospital, and forged relationships with the many families whom he served tirelessly in his years of practice.
