VanSipes celebrate 70 years of marriage

Mary and Richard VanSipe

VANSIPE — Richard and Mary (Havens) VanSipe recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. The couple was married at Greely Baptist Church in Lachine, Mich. on March 25, 1950. Their original attendants included Francis VanSipe as maid of honor, bridesmaids Hilda VanSipe and Gladys VanSipe, best man Robert Morse and groomsmen Ken Manning and Wilfred Richardson. The flower girl was Judy Havens.

The couple enjoyed two receptions, one at the Green Township Hall in Lachine, Mich., and the second reception was at Lakeview Community Center in Battle Creek, Mich.

Richard retired in 1975 as a Michigan State Policeman and commander at the Gladstone Post. Mary took care of their family as a homemaker and worked at State Wide Real Estate in Escanaba.

Both Richard and Mary worked at the Gladstone Golf Course and were avid golfers in their younger years. Mary has made hundreds of quilts and Richard enjoys puzzling, gardening and is a devoted Detroit Tiger fan, never missing a game. They visited every baseball stadium in the United States and took two trips to Germany.

Richard and Mary have three children, Vicki Caron (Tim) of Escanaba, Debra Lathan of Cocoa, Fla., and Rick VanSipe of Clearwater, Fla.; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
