Poes celebrate 50th wedding anniversary

Donald and Marianne Poe

POE — On Feb. 10, 2018, Donald and Marianne Poe, of Gladstone, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a special blessing at All Saints Church. A dinner at Irish Oaks with family and close friends was planned and attended by their daughter Joanne Chouinard, grandchildren Aubrey and Evan; daughter Dianne LaChance, son-in-law Thomas, grandchildren, Trevor and Mason; son David, daughter-in-law Jessica, grandchildren Ethan and Emily; and daughter Suzanne Madsen and granddaughter Savannah.

Don and Marianne were married on Feb. 10, 1968 at All Saints Church in Gladstone, with a reception at the Old Town Restaurant in the Pioneer Motor Lodge (Old Best Western). Their attendants were Ann (Minnie) Bruttomesso, cousin and friend, and Cora (Cowell) Goodwin, niece of the bride. Don chose Wayne Vandenlandenberg and Marvin Meyers, Air Force friends, and John Zimmerman, cousin of the bride as his attendants. Following the wedding, the newlyweds spent their Honeymoon skiing in Snowmass, Colo.

Don is the son of Basil Hall (B.H.) and Mozelle Poe Jr. from Durham, N.C. and met Marianne, daughter of Wilbur and Lydia Cowell, Kipling, while he was stationed at K.I. Sawyer Air Force base. They were introduced to each other by a mutual friend at a horse show.

Don retired as an electrician in 2003, and Marianne stopped driving for the U.S. Post Office in 2004.

Throughout their life together they attended many horse shows together, raising, training and showing horses all over the U.P. In the winter, they went on multiple ski trips all over the U.P. with many friends and family. Some of their favorite ski trips took them to Colorado to ski Vail, Copper, Keystone, Steamboat, and back to Snowmass. On their 40th Anniversary, they skied together at Boyne Mountain. They shared many activities including golfing, trail riding, skiing, and always a yearly trip to North Carolina to visit family and the beach at Atlantic Beach, Morehead City, N.C. or Myrtle Beach, S.C.
