Escanaba and Gladstone stay alive in Major girls softball

ESCANABA — The Escanaba Major Little League (age 10-12) All-Stars advanced and Gladstone stayed alive by posting victories in the District 10 softball tournament here Sunday night. Esky defeated Iron Mountain North 11-6 and Gladstone eliminated Kingsford 4-1 at Lemerand Park. Gladstone faced Iron Mountain in an elimination contest Monday night. Chance Harvey takes top spot in 8th Annual Stroke Awareness Run

ESCANABA — A brother-sister combo from Reed City, Michigan were among the leaders in the Eighth Annual Stroke Awareness Run here Saturday morning. Reed City High School freshman Chance Harvey became the overall winner, covering the five-kilometer (3.1-mile) course in 19 minutes, 20 seconds. “We came up here for a family outing,” he said. “The course is pretty good and so are the weather conditions. Gladstone uses hot bats to win first game

NORWAY — Six teams took to the diamond at Marion Park here Saturday as Gladstone defeated Tri-County 15-0, Kingsford rallied to beat Escanaba 4-2 and Iron Mountain defeated Norway 10-2. Gladstone jumped out to an early lead in the first inning as they scored five runs, two of them coming on a two-run single by Hank Doyen. With the first two weeks of the Pure Michigan Cup complete, athletes teed up this morning and afternoon in the first round of the Island Resort Championship presented by Delta County Chamber. As the third full field event of the season was underway, a plethora of athletes took advantage of the calmer winds resulting in a party at the top of the leaderboard, with a three-way tie for first place through round one. ESCANABA — A pair of softball pitchers came an inning short of throwing no-hitters while posting victories in the District 10 Major (age 10-12) Little League All-Star tournament here Saturday night. Amaya Humbert kept Gladstone hit less through five frames before Escanaba hung on for a 4-2 triumph and Kingsford’s Maci Mae Brooks did likewise in a 9-0 conquest of Norway at Lemerand Park’s Abrahamson Field.
