Sea lamprey control planned in Alger County

MARQUETTE — U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service personnel will apply lampricides to the Sucker River in Alger County to eliminate sea lamprey larvae burrowed in the stream bottom. Applications will be conducted between July 15-24, in accordance with state permits. Application dates are tentative and may be changed based upon local weather or stream conditions near the time of treatment. Little Bay de Noc: Walleye anglers reported catching smaller fish in the head of the bay. Anglers fishing further south, in the outer bay caught some large fish near drop-offs. Anglers casted reaction lures and jigs with soft plastics or live baits. Fish were also caught by those trolling or drifting crawler harnesses. Hazards still exist in forest from ice storm

If you’re heading to northern Michigan or planning to spend time in state parks or forests in that area over the Fourth of July weekend, be aware of lingering hazards and damage from the March 28-30 ice storm. All state parks and boating access sites that closed following the storm have reopened, and all state forest campgrounds are expected to be open by this weekend. Anglers also caught walleye slow-trolling crawler harnesses near drop-offs. Perch anglers found success near reefs and river mouths, as well as locating schools along the deep sides of drop-offs and roaming in basin-like areas.
