Patriotism has to be taught and practiced

EDITOR: It was refreshing to read Jason Dubord’s letter “No American flags” here recently. I have been closely following the demise of our republic for over 20 years, and I have seen that type of omission everywhere. I believe it has much to do with the dumbing down of our populace which includes political correctness. Cuts would hurt Escanaba Public Library

EDITOR: On May 5 at 7 p.m., Escanaba City Council will have its first meeting to review the 2022-2023 budget proposed by its city manager. Included in that budget is a 40% reduction in the allocation for the Escanaba Public Library. It is the only department in the city to have such a significant budget cut. As the former director of this library (1994-2004), I know this budget cut will have a serious impact on the library’s hours and staffing, services and programming, and ability to purchase books and magazines, audio and video materials. A fitting recognition

EDITOR: I was pleasantly surprised to see the article in the newspaper concerning the recent ground breaking for the Monument to Labor project located at the Municipal Dock Park. As a means of background, the project was proposed by city staff in the Escanaba Capital Improvement plan back in 2013 with public input from the various community labor organizations, and the Escanaba Planning Commission and the Escanaba City Council and became part of the Sesquicentennial planning effort. EDITOR: After I read the comments on Escanaba’s official survey regarding the old jail site development, most are thinking of only themselves. The retired man left town years ago because there were no decent jobs, now returns and wants his condo by the lake shore. The liberals are complaining that none of these projects are low income housing. U.P. deer hunting

EDITOR: After reading “Judge denies deer group effort to appeal and NRC decision” regarding U.P. deer hunting, some questions and suggestions come to mind. Why does this group call itself “Deer hunters for a responsible U.P. Management” when these avid hunters want the unlimited slaughter of deer? Richard Smith of Marquette who claims to be a “spokesman” for this group states “Ironically, regulation that would allow hunters to shoot more antlerless deer would do a better job of protecting U.P. bucks than having both buck tags restricted on combo licenses.” Why ...

EDITOR: More than 50 years ago, Congress passed the Occupational Safety and Health Act, promising every worker the right to a safe job. Working people have fought hard to make that promise a reality — winning protections that have made jobs safer and saved thousands of lives.
