North Shore Development, bring careers and people home

EDITOR: After I read the comments on Escanaba’s official survey regarding the old jail site development, most are thinking of only themselves. The retired man left town years ago because there were no decent jobs, now returns and wants his condo by the lake shore. The liberals are complaining that none of these projects are low income housing. Good, because no matter how many times they repeat the lie and they say Escanaba needs more LIH, it simply is not true. Folks should not be thinking what can I get from this, but rather, they should always be thinking about someone else. We ...

U.P. deer hunting

EDITOR: After reading “Judge denies deer group effort to appeal and NRC decision” regarding U.P. deer hunting, some questions and suggestions come to mind. Why does this group call itself “Deer hunters for a responsible U.P. Management” when these avid hunters want the unlimited slaughter of deer? Richard Smith of Marquette who claims to be a “spokesman” for this group states “Ironically, regulation that would allow hunters to shoot more antlerless deer would do a better job of protecting U.P. bucks than having both buck tags restricted on combo licenses.” Why ...

Workers Memorial Day

EDITOR: More than 50 years ago, Congress passed the Occupational Safety and Health Act, promising every worker the right to a safe job. Working people have fought hard to make that promise a reality — winning protections that have made jobs safer and saved thousands of lives. Each day, 340 American workers die from preventable on-the-job injuries and illnesses, while millions more suffer injury or illness. This number does not include the thousands of lives lost due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which exacerbated disparities among workers of color that have been present for decades. ...

No American flags

EDITOR: Yesterday was the day I came to realize America will not make it out of its current demise. I drove down Ludington street to see Ukraine being represented on our community light poles and not a single American flag. So I started digging into why Ukraine would be represented in America before America. Turns out the city doesn’t put up the American flags until Memorial Day (which is a great time to fly our flags). I could not find who put the Ukrainian colors on our light poles. So in my discussions with city employees came the real cause for concern, I was told no one else ...

We need jobs paying a decent living wage

EDITOR: Once again our so called “city fathers” are pushing tourism to the detriment of our city. We need more jobs paying a living wage to encourage our children to stay in the area, not more entry level wages (even at $15/hr.). The citizens of Escanaba and Delta County should take a careful look at what is happening in the Upper Peninsula and in our country as a whole. Here in the U.P. people born and raised in Munising and Marquette, in particular, cannot afford to live there due to the push of tourism promoting those elite from outside the U.P. to move in and purchase second ...

Putin sanctions

EDITOR: For those who pay attention, today it was announced that even stricter sanctions will be imposed on Vladimir Putin. This is the umteenth time that tighter sanctions will be imposed. Sanctions are restrictions on trade, simple as that. Once Russia invaded Ukraine, any and all trade should have stopped. Why are we still doing business with this country? In World War II, after Hitler began the attempted conquest of the world, did we continue buying goods such as oil, natural gas, wheat, corn, etc., from the Nazis? The Korean War was never finished. They split Korea in two. We ...
