Township residents should weigh in on Master Plan

As I talk with residents of Delta County, I realize that most do not know that Delta County is upgrading their Master Plan with a total rewrite through the planning commission. Don’t get this confused with the five-year park plan that the county is completing now. Master Plans are usually written for 20-year periods with reviews every five years. Master Plans set policy, how and where to spend money, and zoning regulations. The purpose is to help communities create a vision of what they want the landscape to look like in the future. Master Plans also give guidance to the planning ...

Be wary of political mailers

Political mailers have already started arriving in the Upper Peninsula. Our household received three last week in support of a particular candidate. I was reminded by this how many people are not aware that much of the political mail they receive is not paid for by the candidate it promotes. In this case, the mailer was paid for by a national political organization funded by billionaire donors and corporate interests. It operates across the country and spends heavily to influence elections, often under names that sound local or community focused. These organizations do not represent ...

On adding Trump name to the Kennedy Center

Imagine being born in the United States some 60-plus years ago, attaining a Ph.D. from Michigan State University, retiring from the State of Michigan after decades of exemplary service, having no criminal record and then being traumatized by masked thugs while on a shopping trip simply because your skin is brown. On another ...

The definition of “scandal” is not just a weird story that ends up in the headlines. Rather, the true meaning of the word, as defined by the church is, “anything that is put in the path of someone trying to live a holy, moral and decent life.” If this definition is true, consider what God said about those who derail the truth with deceptive ideology, “It would be better for them if a millstone were put around their neck and they be thrown into the sea than for anyone to cause one of these little ones to stumble.” An example of authorities forcing their ideology onto those ...

Making US health care affordable

Recently, while waiting for a table to open at our favorite restaurant, my husband and I saw something that made us both sad and concerned. On the bulletin board were two flyers, announcing fundraising events for two young people, both of whom were afflicted by very serious medical conditions. We were struck again with the question of how is it that in such a rich and powerful nation as the United States, its citizens can’t afford health care? Every one of us should have affordable, easy access to medical care, mental health care, and respite care that does not require us to sell our ...

Delta County Veteran Services office thanks area veterans

On Veterans Day on Tuesday, the Delta County Veteran Services office in Escanaba will proudly join our community in honoring the men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces. Our office, 2840 College Ave. Suite 2 in Escanaba, remains dedicated to assisting every veteran with accessing the benefits, care ...
