Existential threat

EDITOR: Some people learned a new word. One that sounds scary. Existential - relating to existence. It is really an overused word that one would use to sound smart. If you are old enough to remember Howard Cosell, it would be one of his favorite words right now. The media loves the word. Every story that comes along, has an existential feel about it. “Climate change is an existential threat to the globe.” “Donald Trump is an existential threat to the country.” “The war in Ukraine will expand and become an existential threat.” “Israel is an existential threat to the ...

What about Christmas?

EDITOR: What do you need to be rescued from? Everybody needs to be rescued from something. During the holidays, especially, wounds and deep hurts seem to make themselves known at a higher level. If it is the first holiday without someone, perhaps the most difficult thing is to be alone with your own thoughts. It is here where thoughts can sound something like this: “Will I ever feel normal again...the hurt, the pain, the uncertainty, the grief, the loneliness, the depression, my children, my grandchildren, the anxiousness. I am a real person with real pain. Is there any hope for ...

Deer hunting

EDITOR: Ignorance is alive and well in our newspapers, TV stations, etc. Exploiting the slaughter every year of our wildlife. Soon there will be no deer left after thousands are killed just like what happened to the bison, almost slaughtered into extinction. Man “cruel” has learned nothing except what is next on the agenda to kill. Are doves next? If this is “God’s Country”, why are God’s creatures being killed? Why do so called God fearing religious people attend church and recite the “Ten Commandments” which includes, “Thou Shalt Not Kill” and then go out and ...

Why Thanksgiving?

EDITOR: What would the world look like if each country suddenly came to the conclusion that the Golden Rule is to be followed? What if the United States chose to promote, “we here in America stand for the flag and kneel for the cross.” These two suggestions would infuriate many. Left, Right, Christian, Atheist, Muslim, Hindu, Mormon...it doesn’t matter. We are all the same. There are no exceptions. We are all born with the same God-given hole in our heart. Who am I? What am I doing here? Why is it that there always seems to be something missing? America today: Are we afraid ...

Nostalgia

EDITOR: My sister called me and said “It’s down.” Not being the brightest bulb in the pack, I responded with, “What’s down?” She said “The Westwood.” Around 1934, August Boden (my grandfather) bought the restaurant on the west end of Delta Avenue. Due to the end of Prohibition a year earlier, August was able to secure a beer and wine license. The nearness to the Soo Line depot made the bar a popular place for railroaders. The first major change happened in the late 1950s. The four lane highway demanded that the building be moved one block east. Biden’s Bar ...

Domestic violence article was appreciated

EDITOR: I want to thank the Daily Press for the wonderful article written in last weekend’s edition spotlighting the domestic violence program put on by Tri-County Safe Harbor and held at Bay College on Oct. 25. Domestic Violence/Abuse is rampant and insidious and a very difficult topic to understand. I attended that event and found the speakers to be courageous and authentic; and thank you for the Q&A and the candlelight vigil. Unfortunately the tragic statistics are also applicable among most church populations and Grace Church in Gladstone, Mich. is serious about reaching ...
