POWERS — It didn’t take long for the Carney-Nadeau Wolves to take charge Wednesday night in a 3-0 (25-9, 25-11, 25-14) volleyball victory over the North Central Jets.

The Wolves grabbed an 11-3 lead on a service ace by senior Talisha McCullough in the opener and led 9-1 after a kill by sophomore Taylor Kedsch in the second set.

“I thought we played fairly solid tonight,” said Carney coach Steve Kedsch. “I thought we covered the floor pretty well. We missed a few more serves than we usually do, but we also had some nice serves. We tried a little different lineup and I thought we did well with it.”

Senior Layla Blahnik-Thoune, who led off Carney’s service rotation, served for eight aces.

“Layla has been serving well lately,” said coach Kedsch. “We decided to try leading off with her and it seemed to work okay.”

North Central tied the finale at eight and nine and was still within 11-10 following a kill by junior Madalynn Dani.

The Wolves then used a 9-1 run to break it open, gaining a 20-11 advantage on a Jets’ passing error.

“Carney-Nadeau is always a tough team and Steve is a great coach,” said Jets’ coach Lynn Britton. “They’re known for their volleyball. They have some tough servers. Our serve receives seem to be improving, but we still have a way to go.”

Taylor Kedsch finished with eight kills and sophomore Liana Blahnik had six. McCullough collected 14 assists and senior Alanis Harris had 11 digs.

Senior Sam DePatie led the Jets with four kills and six digs and Dani added three kills and nine digs.

“We tried to focus on staying positive,” said Britton. “We’re trying to claw our way back and fight for it. We’re also working on gaining self confidence. Our two sophomores (Andie Arsenault and Cheyenne Borucki) and freshman (Katie Whitens) are rising to the challenge of being on varsity.”

The Wolves, who also won the jayvee match (25-8, 25-5), travel to Indian River for Saturday’s Inland Lakes Invitational. The Jets visit Bark River-Harris Monday.

The summary:

Carney-Nadeau — Blahnik-Thoune (eight aces, two kills, three assists, seven digs); Harris (three aces, two kills, 11 digs); McCullough (two aces, 14 assists); Kedsch (eight kills, five digs); Blahnik (six kills); Hansen (three kills); Boulton (two kills).

North Central — Whitens (one ace, one kill, three digs); DePatie (four kills, six digs); Dani (three kills, nine digs).
