Bark River-Harris at Stephenson
STEPHENSON -- The Bark River-Harris boys' basketball team earned a win in its opener against Stephenson Tuesday. The Broncos held off the Eagles 66-52.
"We had a nice win up there," coach Marc Zawacki said. "We were able to get everyone in. I thought the kids played smart basketball. The kids played the way we wanted to.
"Trenton Wood-Keshick had a nice night. The guys did a good job finding him. The guys also did a good job finding Dylon (Lippens) in the post. Our starting five were pretty solid.
"Carter Zawacki had 10 rebounds. That's always nice to get on the boards on both sides of the ball.
"I'd like to clean up our turnovers a bit, but I was happy with the way we played."
Bark River travels to Ishpeming today.

Hannahville at Mid Peninsula
ST. NICHOLAS -- Joe Larson scored 24 points and Damon Sagataw added 14 as the Hannahville Soaring Eagles edged the Mid Peninsula Wolverines 64-61 in overtime.
It was eighth grader DeShawn Metzger, however, making the winning three-pointer for the Soaring Eagles.
"We got them a little off balance, it was nip and tuck until halftime," said Soaring Eagles coach Josh Eagle. "We started with a press in the third and did the same in the fourth. We had just enough tho keep us in the game.
"I don't care how old you are or how tall you are when you're out there you're a basketball player. If we put you out here we trust you. He (Metzger) took a big shot."
Mike Englund led Mid Pen with a career-high 34 in this season-opening non-conference game. Bradley VanDamme collected 10 points and eight rebounds.
"Mike was very balanced in his scoring," said Mid Pen coach Mark Branstrom. "He pretty much did what he needed to do to keep us in the game. Our team is exceptionally young and Hannahville is very tough. They're a good group and Josh (coach Eagle) does a great job with them. Our guys played as hard as they could for four quarters. It's an unbelievable feeling just to get a game in. It was much-needed. We're not happy with the loss, but we're happy with the effort."
Hannahville held a 39-37 rebounding edge, sank 27-of-82 field goals and committed 22 turnovers. Mid Pen was 23-of-61 from the floor and had 26 miscues.

Carney-Nadeau at Norway
NORWAY -- The Carney-Nadeau boys basketball team started out of sync, and it was enough for Norway to earn the 43-37 victory Tuesday at Norway.
"Things were a little sloppy, but we are happy to sneak out with the win," said Knights coach Jeff Gallino. "We need to improve on late game situations and handling pressure. Was pleased with the teams effort overall."
Carney coach Paul Polfus had similar thoughts regarding his team's performance.
"We shot so poor and our movement on offense wasn't great," Polfus said. "We played hard and switched up a few defense things and that seemed to help. I give our kids credit, we really came together later in the game."

Maplewood Baptist at Big Bay de Noc
GARDEN -- The Big Bay de Noc Black Bears girls basketball team defeated the Maplewood Baptist Academy Black Bears with a score of 39-32 to open their season Monday night in Garden.
Big Bay took the lead early, ending the first quarter ahead 7-2. However, Maplewood had a strong second with 14 points to end the half ahead 16-11.
When the teams emerged for the second half, Big Bay found its groove once again. They outscored Maplewood 12-6 in the third and 16-10 in the fourth to take the win 39-32.
Alix Bleau led Big Bay in scoring with 15 points. Piper jones and Gracynn Durrance led the team in rebounds with 16 and 12, respectively. Camryn Pederson had six steals while Ellie Nedeau had four.
