GLADSTONE — A big third inning made a huge difference as the Gladstone Braves defeated Powers North Central 14-2 in five here Monday night. The Braves, taking advantage of four fielding errors, scored 11 times in the third en route to their fifth straight victory. “They gave us a game, then suddenly a couple hits dropped and it turned quickly,” Braves’ coach Tyler Swanson said. “We’ll take the runs anyway we can get them. ESCANABA — The Escanaba boys tennis team took the court for the first time this spring and fell 7-1 to Negaunee here Monday. The Eskymos only win came at No. 4 singles as Kyle Smith defeated Axl Sarasin 6-1, 6-1 in his varsity debut. The sophomore has a tremendous tennis I.Q. and Kyle has an athletic and smart style of play that is going to frustrate all his opponents at four singles this season. HARRIS — The Women’s Professional Billiard Association’s U.S. Open Pool Championships made their return here this weekend, featuring a 64-player international field with $60,000 added to the prize fund. This marked the first time the U.S. Open was held in the Upper Peninsula following an absence of nearly a decade.
