Eskymos win thriller in Marinette

MARINETTE — It was a chilly day on the diamond as the Escanaba Eskymos powered their way to a 7-6 victory over Marinette here Monday.

The Eskymos collected 12 hits to 11 for Marinette.

The Eskymos got on the board early in the top of the first inning as Bryce Bichler drew a lead off walk and later scored on an error by the third baseman to give Escanaba a 1-0 lead.

The Marines tied the game in the bottom of the second inning as Miles Rutherford singled on a line drive to center field and later scored when Hunter Goldsmith grounded into a fielder’s choice.

In the bottom of the third inning, Wyatt Stauss doubled on a line drive to right and Cooper Smith had an RBI-single to score Stauss and Rutherford and Ryker Maye each hit a single with Maye bringing home a run and the Marines led 3-1.

The Eskymos answered in the top of the fifth as Brody Ison drew a lead-off walk and stole second base as well as advancing to third on a throwing error. Lennox Peacock singled to the shortstop to score a run and later scored after Mikaiden Hughes moved Peacock to third on a single and senior Ashton Rymkos hit an RBI-single to tie the game at three.

Hughes finished the day 3 for 4 at the plate.

“It’s great to get back on the barrel again,: Hughes said. “I feel like I’m getting back into that rhythm every time up and just looking to get good contact.”

The Marines tied the game in the bottom of the fifth as Rutherfor flew out to right field to score a run. Rutherford finished the day 2 for 4 with one RBI.

The Eskymos did their most damage in the sixth inning as they posted four runs on three hits highlighted by an RBI-single on a hard ground ball to left field by Bryce Bichler and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Peacock.

The Marines answered in the bottom of the sixth as Smith singled to score a run. The Marines added two more runs to cut the deficit to one at 7-6 but could not finish it off.

Ashton Rymkos got the win for the Eskymos allowing four runs on eight hits with one strikeout and two walks. Brian Boutillier came in the game in relief allowing two runs on tree hits with two walks in two innings of work.

“We have played some tough teams,” Eskymos coach Scott Hanson said. “It was good to get back in the win column and give us some momentum going forward. I feel we hit the ball well and Ashton and Brian did a good job on the mound.”
