Broncos overcome slow start to tame Wolves in volleyball action

HARRIS — The Bark River-Harris Broncos overcame a slow start, then rolled a 3-0 (25-23, 25-16, 25-10) volleyball victory over the Carney-Nadeau Wolves here Tuesday night. C-N led much of the first set and was ahead 22-19 before committing a hitting error. The Broncos capitalized and surged to a 23-22 lead on another hitting miscue by the Wolves. Escanaba cross country looks to build for the future

ESCANABA — With no seniors on their cross country teams the Escanaba Eskymos are hoping to build for the future this season. The Eskymos, who have two meets under their belts, resume in Thursday’s Marinette Border Battle. They have six girls and five boys on their roster, including sophomore Avah Akerly who placed 15th in Friday’s Dale Phillips Invitational at Marquette. “Avah had injuries last year and we figured out what we needed to do,” coach Scott Dykema said. “She really enjoys running. Marquette holds Dale Phillips Invitational

MARQUETTE — Area cross country teams may not have been in the running for top honors in the Dale Phillips Invitational, but few of the local runners turned in solid individual performances here Friday. The Marquette girls squeezed past Houghton 58-60 for the girls’ title. Downstate Shepherd placed third with 90 points, followed by Munising 102 and Negaunee 151. Shepherd edged Marquette 33-39 for the boys’ crown.
