HARRIS -- The Bark River-Harris Broncos overcame a slow start, then rolled a 3-0 (25-23, 25-16, 25-10) volleyball victory over the Carney-Nadeau Wolves here Tuesday night.
C-N led much of the first set and was ahead 22-19 before committing a hitting error.
The Broncos capitalized and surged to a 23-22 lead on another hitting miscue by the Wolves.
A BR-H service error enabled C-N to tie the score at 23.
BR-H regained the lead on a kill by junior outside hitter Makayla Hyslop and secured the opener on a serve receive error by the Wolves.
"We got into a rut," BR-H coach Brooke Bartley said. "We really didn't play as well as we hoped in the first set."
A BR-H hitting miscue enabled the Wolves to gain a 10-3 advantage.
The Broncos then got a sideout on a kill by Hyslop and a six-point service run by junior middle blocker Skylar Brayak helped them pull even at 10.
C-N led 20-17 following a service ace by freshman CeCe Corrigan.
BR-H got within a point on a hitting error.
C-N senior Paige Jardeen then pushed the ball over the net for a sideout and a 21-19 lead.
"Being a first-year coach, this is a huge learning experience," Wolves' mentor Mackenzie Walcher said. "This is the best I've seen our girls play. We haven't been able to get into our gym because it's being remodeled. Our serving did very well and CeCe really had a good match tonight. We looked very good when we took the 22-19 lead. Our communication was very good."
A five-point run by junior defensive specialist Alayna Johnson helped the Broncos gain a 9-3 cushion in the second set.
The Wolves shaved their deficit to 10-6 on a Broncos' service error.
C-N was still within 13-8 following a four-hit violation.
The Wolves then committed a service miscue, enabling BR-H to get a sideout and six-point advantage.
BR-H gained an 18-8 cushion on a net violation,
The Wolves then trimmed their deficit to 18-11 on a return error before the Broncos surged to a 21-11 advantage on passing miscue.
A net violation by BR-H, enabled C-N to get within 21-14.
Back-to-back aces by Johnson then provided the Broncos with an insurmountable 24-14 advantage.
The Broncos quickly took charge in the third, gaining an 8-3 lead on an ace by senior defensive specialist Zoey Jorasz.
C-N was within 12-7 before the Broncos extended their advantage to 21-9 on a kill by Brayak.
The teams exchanged sideouts before Jorasz secured the decision with three consecutive aces.
Jorasz finished with nine aces and Mira Johnson added four. Junior setter Alana Nault dished out 15 assists. Hyslop collected six kills and Brayak had five.
The Wolves, comprised mainly of underclassmen, are playing without sophomore Kenna Thiry who's out with a head injury.
Jardeen was their leader with five kills and eight digs. Freshman Jenah Ernest added six digs and classmate Lauren Eichhorn served for three aces.
Bartley believes the Kingsford Invitational prepared the Broncos for their (Skyline Central) conference matches.
"That's a very good tournament to go to," she said. "We have four new hitters. This is little bit of a learning experience."
The Wolves host Munising tonight at 6 and the Broncos host the Mustangs Tuesday.
