Bay women defeat Muskegon Community College

ESCANABA — The Bay College women wasted little time taking charge here Tuesday night in a 100-45 basketball rout of Muskegon Community College in a Great Lakes District C quarterfinal game.

The victory sends the Norse (24-5) to Mott Community College at Flint to face Grand Rapids Community College (20-9) in a semifinal match-up Friday at 11 a.m. The Jayhawks finished 11-14.

“This feels really good,” Bay sophomore guard Lauren Zawada said. “This was a special game. I played for all my family.”

Bay extended its lead to 18-2 on Zawada’s jump shot from the lane with 3:59 left in the first quarter.

A jumper by Bay sophomore guard Gracie Kleikamp made it 25-8 with 12 seconds remaining in the opening frame.

Sophomore guard Sierra Stoy then sank three free throws to bring the Jayhawks within 25-11 with 4.7 seconds left in the first.

The Norse responded with 20 unanswered points, gaining a 45-11 cushion on a field goal by sophomore guard Mckenzie Hoffmeyer midway through the second stanza.

Bay then outscored Muskegon 12-8 through the remainder of the second, gaining a 57-19 halftime advantage.

The Norse, who were off to the races from the beginning, continued to play at a very fast pace and stretched their advantage to 78-32 on a steal and a jumper from the boulevard by Hoffmeyer with 38 seconds remaining in the third quarter.

The fourth frame offered more of the same as the Norse ran their advantage to 91-38 on a 12-foot jumper by Kleikamp, who played at Gogebic Community College a year ago.

“Region 13 wasn’t like this at all,” she said. “We had only three teams in our region and had to play on an army base at Bismarck, North Dakota. It’s absolutely harder to get through Region 12 because there’s a larger number of teams and stronger competition. Also, this year we got past the first round. It feels great to be going down there. I thought we played really well tonight.”

The Norse finished with a 61-35 rebounding advantage, hit 41-of-96 field goals and 11-of-12 free throws and committed just five turnovers.

Zawada led the Norse with 21 points, 11 rebounds, six steals and four assists. Hoffmeyer added 19 points, 12 boards, three assists and three steals. Sophomore guard Makenna Hendrickson contributed 12 points, nine rebounds, three assists and three steals.

“It was very fun playing here, but it was also a lot of hard work,” Zawada said. “Right now I’m a little undecided which college I’m going to. I just want to finish this season, then I’ll look at that a little more when the season is over. I would like to keep playing, but if nothing comes my way, that’s okay, too. I had fun at Bay.”

Freshman guards Jillian Fraser, who drained four 3-point shots, and Aubree Blackburn also scored 12 points for the Norse.

Muskegon, which had only six available players, turned the ball over 24 times and finished 15-of-54 from the field and 14-of-16 at the line. Freshman guard Shamari Hamilton was the Jayhawks’ leading scorer with 12 points.

The four Norse sophomore players were honored at halftime of their final home game.

“I think halftime hit home for our sophomores that this was their last home game,” Fassett said. “They wanted to go out on a positive note. Because the way our conference was, we didn’t press as much. Tonight, we came out fast and pressed right away. They only had six players, which was unfortunate for them. We’ve all been there at some point. We rebounded well. Twenty-seven of our rebounds were offensive.”
