Kingsford wins thriller over Gladstone
GLADSTONE — Kingsford’s Blake and Drew Tomasoski are brothers, both of whom wear basketball uniform number 24.
Both of them also hit game-winning shots here Thursday night.
Blake, who’s a junior, drained a 12-foot jumper from a tough angle on the right baseline at the buzzer to lift the fourth-ranked Flivvers to a 51-49 victory over the fifth-ranked Gladstone boys in this Great Northern Conference varsity contest.
Drew is a freshman who sank a five-foot jumper in the closing moments of the fourth overtime in the jayvee game, also won by Kingsford 60-59.
“You always believe those shots are going to go in,” Kingsford junior Jett Buckley said. “This is a big confidence builder. It feels great to come out of here with a good win. We’ve been on a hot streak. They’re a tough team, though. We had a long wait after a four-overtime jayvee game, but you just go out there and play with confidence. We have some tough games coming up, but those will be good preparation for (Division 2) districts.”
In the varsity game, Gladstone junior guard Braidyn Miron hit a jumper from the boulevard to tie the score at 49, setting the stage for Blake Tomasoski’s game-winner which enabled Kingsford to improve to 12-4 overall and 4-2 in the GNC with its seventh consecutive victory.
Junior guard Lonnie Davey hit a layup on a pass from sophomore guard Alex Prins which put the Braves (11-7 overall, 2-4 GNC) ahead 45-44 to start the fourth quarter.
Prins added a layup to make it 47-44 with 6:04 left to play.
Senior Owen Olkkonen split a pair of free throws to bring the Flivvers within two points at 4:23.
Buckley, who was fouled just three seconds later, tied the score at 47 with a pair of gifters.
A layup by senior Jack Kriegl, on a pass from Olkkonen, gave Kingsford a 49-47 lead with 3:05 remaining.
Neither team scored for more than two minutes prior to Miron’s tying layup.
“We kind of switched our defense and went with an all-guard offense,” Kingsford coach Ben Olsen said. “We had a hand in Lonnie Davey’s face at all times, but he still hurt us. We’ve been rebounding well. We’ve been efficient in the last five games.”
Buckley hit a jumper from top of the key to give the Flivvers a 27-23 lead at halftime.
They still led 42-37 after Kriegl converted two free throws with 63 seconds left in the third quarter.
The Braves went ahead 43-42 on Davey’s jumper from top of the key with 11 seconds remaining in the third.
Olkkonen then sank a pair of gifters to put Kingsford in front 44-43 with 2.5 seconds left in the third frame.
The Flivvers took their largest lead at 21-14 on a 22-foot jumper from the left wing by Olkkonen.
Gladstone then shaved its deficit to 24-23 on a jumper from inside the free throw circle by Prins with 47.3 seconds remaining in the second stanza.
Both teams struggled from the free throw line with Gladstone hitting 4-of-10 shots and Kingsford finishing 8-of-16.
Davey led the Braves with 24 points and Prins added 12. Olkkonen and Buckley scored 16 apiece for the Flivvers.
Gladstone, which didn’t turn the ball over in the opening frame, had 10 of its 13 miscues in the second quarter. Kingsford finished with 10 turnovers.
In the jayvee game, freshman Luke Rice scored 22 points and Drew Tomasoski had 17 points for the Flivvers.
Freshman Landon Davey led the Braves with 14 points. Sophomore Ryder Amis hit 11 and freshman Jack Prins had 10.
Both teams resume Tuesday with the Braves traveling to Negaunee and the Flivvers hosting Iron Mountain.
