Flivvers knock Emeralds out in district action
IRON MOUNTAIN — Shots on goal were a scarce commodity for the Manistique Emeralds here Tuesday night as they dropped a 2-0 decision to the Kingsford Flivvers in a Division 3 regional opener.
The victory sends the Flivvers (11-12) to Marquette where they’ll face the host Sentinels (17-7-3) in a semifinal contest at 6 p.m.
Kingsford defeated the Sentinels 2-1 in their lone regular season meeting at Mountain View Arena Dec. 23.
The Emeralds, who managed only 13 shots in Tuesday’s game, finished 4-20-2.
Just 22 seconds elapsed when Manistique drew its first penalty.
Senior forward Will Murvich capitalized on the power play, giving the Flivvers a 1-0 lead.
The Emeralds, who struggled to clear the puck out of their zone, were outshot 19-2 in the opening frame.
“The guys played hard,” Kingsford coach Greg Wadge said. “I thought their goalie (senior Jackson Goudreau) was fantastic. We had our opportunities. We just couldn’t score. Their penalty kill unit was pretty good. I think we had four or five quality chances.”
Manistique also got hit with a five-minute major infraction, but solid play from its penalty kill unit helped the Emeralds stay within a goal.
Sophomore forward Paolo Lenzi then scored the second goal from the doorstep early in the second period.
Although Kingsford didn’t score again, it entered the final 17 minutes with a 39-6 shots on goal advantage.
The Flivvers, who finished with 46 shots, went 1-for-3 on the power play. The Emeralds were 0-for-2.
“We controlled the play,” Wadge said. “We wanted to put a lot of pucks on net. Then, we played more defensively in the third period.”
The Emeralds appeared to have their best scoring chance late in the second stanza, but were denied on a breakaway by senior goaltender Nate Scullon.
Goudreau stopped 44 shots despite being under siege most of the night. Scullon turned away all 13 shots he faced.”
“Our goalie did a good job,” Wadge said. “It can sometimes be a challenge to keep your focus when you face so few shots. Although, they’ve improved a lot through the course of the season. We’ve been very good at staying out of the box. We were among the least penalized teams in the conference. That will need to continue Thursday. Marquette is solid on the power play. Staying out of the box is mandatory.”
At Sault Ste. Marie, the host Blue Devils (9-19) advanced with a 5-2 triumph over Negaunee (9-19).
They will visit the Hannahville Ice & Turf Complex in Wells where they’ll face Escanaba (17-9-1) in the other semifinal Friday at 6 p.m.
The championship game takes place Feb. 25 at Lakeview Arena in Marquette.
