ESCANABA — The effort was there, but Menominee proved to be too much for Escanaba as they defeated the Eskymos 67-42 here Tuesday.

Escanaba cut the Menominee lead to 30-25 early in the third quarter on a 3-pointer by Hayven Sandoval-Nolde. The Maroons answered with a 13-2 run with 3-pointers by senior Darrent Butler, junior Dylan Beal and senior Tanner Theuerkauf who also had a layup and split a pair of free throws during the scoring run to extend the Maroons lead to 42-27.

“Our coaches said in the locker room that we need to finish games strong,” Theuerkauf said. “We had stretches where we played good basketball but we didn’t play a complete game tonight.”

The Maroons outscored the Eskymos 14-5 in the fourth quarter to preserve the victory.

“It just got away from us there,” Jake Berlinski said. “We have played 16 out of 17 days with no days off and played a game on Saturday and I think we just ran out of gas.”

Sandoval-Nolde led the way for the Eskymos with 15 points and Braden Cooper added 10. The Maroons were led by Butler with 17, Theuerkauf had 15 and Beal scored 11.

The Eskymos will be back in action Friday as they travel to Kingsford.
