Escanaba wrestling defeats Iron Mountain and Bark River-Harris

ESCANABA — The Escanaba wrestlers took care of business in convincing fashion here Wednesday, posting victories over Iron Mountain (72-12) and Bark River-Harris (70-12) on Parents’ Night.

“The kids wrestled very well,” Esky coach John Rogers said. “Our young guys had a lot of success Saturday (in the Elks Invitational) and carried that over. They’re gaining momentum.”

Iron Mountain hung on for a 38-35 triumph over BR-H.

The aggressive Eskymos won 13 bouts by pin, in which 10 were decided in less than 60 seconds in this triangular meet.

Conner McClelland recorded two pins in the 113-pound class as did Cash Kenneally at 132, Dustin Skerbeck (157), Cannon Arnt (165) and Zahn Anderson (285).

Esky’s Cody Crowe, who won the 120 decision, in the Elks’ tourney, ended up taking the night off with two forfeits.

“We can’t give Cody enough credit,” Rogers said. “He likes competition. He’s not happy with taking the forfeits. Iron Mountain had a full lineup. Bark River-Harris’s 215 guy wrestled real well and their heavyweight is a stud.”

The Mountaineers led BR-H 32-6 after the 157-pound match in which Jake Johnson pinned Cameron Sundman in 66 seconds.

Miles Halfaday (165) won by technical fall over Tony Ross to bring the Broncos within 32-11.

The Broncos took a forfeit at 175 before Cannon Brunette (190) pinned Connor Maynard at 2:19 to make it 32-23.

BR-H then pulled within 32-29 with a forfeit at 215 and Trevor Leadman (285) pinned Vinny Rose in 3:01 to send the Broncos ahead 35-32.

The Broncos, however, had nobody available at 106 which helped the Mountaineers claim victory.

“Cannon wrestled well,” BR-H coach Evan Lamb said. “We were missing two kids. I’m pleased with the effort against Iron Mountain, but we were really flat against Escanaba. I didn’t have the kids prepared enough. We were coming off a pretty strong showing on Saturday, but it didn’t carry over. Confidence is one big thing we have to work on. We need to increase the intensity and work on our technique. We also need to get better technically.”

Brunette pinned both of his opponents and Iron Mountain’s John Manier at 106 and 113 pounds and Diangelo Saldana (144) had two pins apiece.

All three teams resume in Saturday’s Ray Mariucci Invitational at Kingsford.
