Carney-Nadeau Boys victorious over Hannahville

HANNAHVILLE — It has often been said it’s hard to beat the same team three times in a row.

The Carney-Nadeau boys accomplished that here Wednesday night by defeating Hannahville for the third time in two weeks, 69-63 in a non-conference match-up.

But not before the Soaring Eagles made things interesting.

Carney held a 48-30 advantage midway through the third quarter before the Soaring Eagles began their comeback.

“In the past few years they’ve been a gritty team,” C-N coach Mike Polfus said. “They’ve played hard and kept battling. They killed us on the boards. We definitely need to work on our rebounding.”

Hannahville answered with a 13-0 run, shaving its deficit to 48-43 on a steal and layup by sophomore Keenan Smith early in the fourth frame.

The Wolves gained a 52-43 cushion on a fast break layup by sophomore Kayne Wilson with 5:37 remaining in the contest.

A putback by sophomore forward Dawson Lea and an underhand layup by Smith, however, brought Hannahville back within 52-47 midway through the fourth.

“We had a pretty good halftime talk,” Hannahville coach Jon Bintner said. “You could tell their intensity picked up in the second half. They (Wolves) were shooting the ball pretty well, then we held them to 13 points in the third quarter. We’re proud of the boys for coming back. Only, we got into a situation where we had to put them on the line, and to their credit they were hitting their free throws.”

The Wolves extended their lead to 64-51 on a layup and free throw by senior Sur Kyman Shepard with 2:22 left to play.

Hannahville got its deficit down to 68-60 on a layup by junior guard M.J. Smith. By then, however, there were only eight seconds remaining.

The Wolves cashed in on 16-of-26 free throws, hitting several of those while extending their lead in the fourth quarter.

“We shot very well from the line and handled the ball well,” Polfus said. “This is the best we shot free throws all year and we needed those. They kept coming.”

C-N led 16-7 after the first quarter and 29-16 following a layup by junior Cullen Kasbohm with 2:38 remaining in the second.

Hannahville responded with an 8-2 run, trimming its deficit to 31-24 on a pair of gifters by senior Sam Beaver late in the second frame, before the Wolves scored the last four points before halftime.

Wilson scored 22 points for the Wolves. Kasbohm added 18. Freshman guard Lane Mellen tallied 15 and Shepard had 13.

Beaver scored 18 points and Arteaga and Keenan Smith hit 11 apiece for Hannahville, which committed 17 turnovers. The Wolves had 11 miscues.

The Wolves, who also won the jayvee game 65-45, host Superior Central Tuesday.

Hannahville, which hosted Big Bay de Noc Thursday, travels to Kinross Maplewood Baptist Jan. 23-24.
