Eskymos defeat Knights even record at 1-1

ESCANABA — Three double-digit scores led the Escanaba Eskymos to 49-36 win over the Norway Knights here Monday. Senior Lennox Peacock led the way with 14 points for thw Eskymos while Taylor Asgaard and Hayven Sandoval-Nolde had 10 points each.

“The boys came out strong tonight,” Peacock said. “We had a great week of practice and we played really well on defense tonight. It was a group effort any guy on the team would tell you the same thing and I’m proud of our guys tonight.”

The Eskymos jumped out to an early 9-3 lead on 3-pointer from the wing by sophomore Braden Cooper who finished with eight points on the night.

The Knight battled back as Owen Baij knocked down a 3-pointer in the left corner and Elliott Kraemer was fouled shooting a three and converted all three free throws to cut the deficit to 14-13.

Sandoval-Nolde hit a corner three and Lennox Peacock drove to the basket for a layup during an 8-0 run for the Eskymos to extend thier lead to 22-13.

“The first night in Negaunee was horible,” Sadoval-Nolde said. “So to get a win at home in our first home game it just felt really good to get that one.”

Knights senior Anthony Pineda hit a 3-pointer and Kaleb LaPine drove to the basket for a layup to cut the deficit to 22-18.

Sandoval-Nolde knocked down a corner three at the buzzer to send the Eskymos into the locker room with a 25-18 lead.

“We knew we needed something going into the half to keep the momentum,” Sandoval-Nolde said. “So I got it and threw it up and was able to knock it down.”

The Knights used a 3-pointer from Kraemer and a layup by Noah Pearson to cut the Eskymos lead to three at 29-26 but the Eskymos closed the game outscoring the Knights 20-10.

“It was a way more fun locker room to walk into tonight,” Eskymos coach Jake Berlinski said. “I was really proud of our defense holding a Norway team to 36 points That is a great effort by all the guys on this team.”
