Sports Flashback Oct. 26-Nov. 1
Oct. 31, 1960 — The Holy Name Crusaders and Manistique Emeralds completed their football seasons by playing to a 12-12 tie. Holy Name’s Dick LaBrasseur hit 7-of-15 passes for 135 yards and dived one year for a touchdown. Dave Sullivan dashed 35 yards for another score. Manistique’s Jim Malloch scored on a seven-yard run and Bill DeRousha caught a 21-yard for another TD.
Nov. 1, 1965 — The Escanaba Eskymos collected 315 yards in a 26-0 football victory over Holy Name in the first gridiron meeting between the two schools. Bob Haack rushed for 99 yards and two TDs on 18 carries and Steve Anzalone hit five-of-10 passes for 93, including a two-yard toss to Ed Gauthier. Tim O’Brien recovered a fumble in the end zone for another score in the season-finale.
The Gladstone Braves concluded their season with a 7-6 triumph over the L’Anse Purple Hornets. Mike Damitz scored on a 35-yard run and Mark Goodman provided the extra point for the Braves, who finished 5-3-1. Damitz rushed for 77 yards on 20 carries and Gary Larson added 65 in 16 attempts.
Oct. 26, 1970 — Gary Young ran for 106 yards and four TDs as Gladstone blanked Sault Ste. Marie 44-0 in its season finale. Wayne Marshall scored on a 17-yard interception return and a five-yard pass from Bob Prins.
John Erickson scored on a 97-yard interception return, but it wasn’t enough to keep Esky from dropping a 7-6 decision to Iron Mountain. John Vogt led the Eskymos in rushing with 132 yards on 29 carries.
Lee Vincent ran for TDs of 57 and 54 yards, helping the Powers North Central Jets conclude their season with a 48-0 triumph in another season-finale. Mike Maule added a pair of four-yard TD runs and threw a 63-yard aerial to Daryl Beauchamp for another score. John Faccio tossed a 49-yard TD pass to Jim Fazer and Roger Kregelka concluded the scoring on a 43-yard dash.
Oct. 27, 1970 — John Hirn of Escanaba was crown champion of the 13-year-old division in district punt, pass and kick competition in Milwaukee. Jay Ketcik of Manistique placed third in the 12-year-old class.
Oct. 31, 1970 — The Manistique Emeralds ended on a sour note, dropping a 43-12 decision to the Kingsford Flivvers. Sophomore Mike Beckman scored his first varsity TD on a three-yard run and Kendall Neeson tossed a 53-yard TD pass to Dave Mickelson.
