Sports Flashback Nov. 2-8

Nov. 5, 1975 — The Gladstone girls overcame a slow start, then rolled to a 57-17 basketball victory over the Kingsford Flivvers. The Braves, who trailed 6-4 after the first quarter, were led by Patty Kennedy’s 14 points. Gail Demeuse added 12 and Ann Altese and Lori Becker had 10 each.

The Perkins Yellowjackets remained undefeated in 11 games this season in a 65-26 conquest of Eben. Lynette Royer paced the Yellowjackets with 17 points. Diane Johnson, Lisa Carlson and Karen Miller finished with 10 apiece. Julie Maki had nine for the Eagles.

Carney-Nadeau won its 14th straight in a 44-33 triumph over Powers North Central. Janet Neece led the Wolves with 15 points. Karen Linder tossed in 14 and Nance Janofski finished with nine. Lydia St. Juliana paced North Central with 12.

Nov. 7, 1975 — Perkins ran its winning streak to 12 games while earning the Central U.P. Conference title in 56-25 rout of Big Bay de Noc. Royer tossed in 22 points. Johnson added 12 points and 13 rebounds. Carlson also scored 12 points. Faye Hartman led the Black Bears with seven points.

Bark River-Harris won its fourth straight in a 60-33 conquest of Eben. Jill VanEnkevort paced the Broncos with 12 points. Jane Kleiman collected 11 and eight boards and Brenda Hurtubise had 10 points. Maki scored 12 and Kay Johnson hit 10 for the Eagles.

Donna Krusic’s 12 points and 11 rebounds was enough to lead the Manistique Emeralds past the Sault Ste. Marie Blue Devils 41-31. Mary Gregurash added nine points and Gail Pistulka had seven points and 11 boards and Jan Arnold grabbed 14 rebounds.

Nov. 5, 1980 — Sandy Davison scored 15 points, leading the Escanaba Eskymos past the Gladstone Braves 76-41. Jeanne Courneene, Michelle Hall and Shelly Livermore finished with 12 apiece. Leanna Rouker led the Braves with 14 points and Belinda Kutzera had 12.

A strong second half fueled Rock Mid Peninsula in a 52-42 triumph over Carney-Nadeau. Christine Brunette and Teri Winkelbauer scored 13 points each for Mid Pen, which trailed 24-18 at halftime. Mary VanDamme added 12 and Lonnie Arts finished with nine. Kelly Strahl led the Wolves with 10.

The Eben Eagles took over sole possession of first place in the Central U.P. Conference with a 62-53 victory over the Trenary Comets. Mary Knaus paced the Eagles with 17 points and Billie Laukanen added 15. Pam Michael scored 22 points for the Comets. Ellen Thompson chipped in with 14 and Robin Thompson had 12.

Nov. 7, 1980 — Esky closed out a perfect regular season as it romped past West Iron County 77-32. Hall paced the Eskymos with 17 points. Courneene hit 14 and Davison had 12.

Tammy Szapa tossed in 13 points and Diane Aggen added 12, leading Carney-Nadeau past Felch North Dickinson 58-38 in a regular-season finale. Connie Johnson led the Nordics with 12.
