Eskymos take down Braves in straight sets to advance to district semifinals

ESCANABA — The Escanaba Eskymos used a fast start to pick up the victory over Gladstone in straight sets (25-20, 25-12, 27-25) in a district quarterfinal game here Monday.
Brooklyn Beauchamp had four aces and six kills to help lead the way for the Eskymos. In the first set. Escanaba led 6-5 when Beauchamp delivered three consecutive aces during a five-point serving run to put the Eskymos up 11-5.
“I saw that their serve and receive was struggling a little bit,” Beauchamp said. I just tried my best to hit it hard and find nice spots to drop it in.”
The Braves scored seven of the next 11 points to cut the deficit to 15-12 on a kill by senior Lillie Johnson.
The Eskymos answered by scoring 10 of the next 16 points to take the first set.
“Our girls did a good job out there tonight,” Eskymos coach Beverly Ziebell said. “Chloe Dubord stepped into the libero role and played well for us in this game.”
Dubord had 12 digs to go along with four aces.
In the second set, Esky jumped out to an early 5-1 lead on a kill by Mary Kate Tourangeau. Esky scored eight of the next 11 points to extend the lead to 13-4 on a kill by Susie Moberg.
Esky scored 12 of the next 20 points to take the second set highlighted by a pair of aces by Dubord.
“With Harlee out it was a big adjustment,” Dubord said. “I put the jersey on and played my best and our team really stepped up tonight.”
In the third set, esky jumped out to an early 15-5 lead. The Braves responded by scoring 15 of the next 19 points to cut the deficit to 21-20. The Eskymos scored back-to-back points to extend the lead to 23-20. Gladstone scored five of the next six points to take a 25-24 lead but the Eskymos scored the last three points to seal the win on a kill by senior Ava Stalboeger who had seven kills on the night.
Escanaba will travel to play Negaunee in the district semifinal Wednesday.
