SPALDING — Munising proved a tough match-up for Powers North Central here Monday night as it handed the Jets a 3-0 (25-11, 25-14, 25-9) volleyball loss.

The Jets fell behind 3-0 in the third set before getting a sideout on a Mustangs’ error on a return.

A service ace by sophomore Eve Cocco brought the Jets within 3-2 before a defensive miscue enabled them to tie the score.

North Central then committed a service error which allowed the Mustangs to regain the lead.

The Jets got within 6-4 on a passing error and were still within 8-5 following a hitting miscue before the Mustangs began to pull away.

“We had flashes of playing well, although it’s hard to get into a rhythm against a good team,” Jets’ coach Rick Mick said. “Our biggest goal is to improve in every game. We improved from the first to the second game (or set), but we didn’t improve from the second to the third. Although we had some longer volleys in the third game.”

Munising extended its lead to 14-6 on a Jets’ passing error, forcing them to use a time-out.

A net violation by the Mustangs shaved their lead to 14-7

Following a sideout, senior Hayden Bayer served for six consecutive points, helping the Mustangs gain an insurmountable 21-7 advantage on a kill by sophomore Addie Bowerman.

“We’ve been a solid team all year long,” Mustangs’ coach Josh Cole said. “I thought we had real good serving and offensively we did pretty well. Our defense has been real good all year which makes our offense look good.”

After dominating the opener, the Mustangs offered more of the same in the second set.

Munising scored the first four points of the second before a hitting error enabled the Jets to get on the board.

An ace by junior Kaylen Kienitz gave Munising an 11-4 cushion and one by classmen Carissa Deatsman gave the Mustangs an insurmountable 22-10 advantage.

“They have a very good team,” Mick said. “They mixed their serves well and our kids had a hard time judging those. We’ll see them again next week which will give us an opportunity to improve.”

Kienitz hit eight aces to go with six kills. Deatsman added seven aces. Bayer finished with five aces and seven kills and Bowerman recorded 12 kills.

The Jets, who won the jayvee match (26-24, 25-23) travel to Munising Monday.

Starting at $3.50/week.
