Sports Flashback June 29-July 5
June 29, 2000 — The Escanaba Cubs unleashed a 21-hit attack in a 23-1 American Legion baseball rout of the Negaunee Diamonds. Tom Seehafer led the way with four hits. Justin Williams went 3-for-3 with two doubles. Jon Bintner added three doubles and Kurt Lauscher had three hits. Seehafer, Williams and Bintner also drove in four runs apiece.
Lesley Noel threw a no-hitter in the rain, helping Mead earn a 1-0 softball victory over Besse Forest Products in the Gladstone Girls’ Senior Little League. Amanda Van Effen scored the lone run on a passed ball in the fifth inning.
Gibby’s Bar/Bowl-a-rama Lanes posted its first victory, squeezing past Tailgators Bar & Grill 5-4. Kevin Lyle, Tim Shope and Don Kelloniemi led Gibby’s with two hits each.
June 30, 2000 — Scott Hebert of Escanaba retained his Michigan Open golf title, earning $14,500 and finishing with a 10-under-par 278 on The Bear at the Grand Traverse Resort & Spa in Acme, Mich. Flint Golf Club pro Jeff Roth of Livonia, Mich. was runner-up at 283, one stroke ahead of Texas Christian University sophomore Stephen Polanski. Brian Robinette of Escanaba took 26th with 296 strokes.
Brad Gauthier and Tyler Delvaux combined on a no-hitter, leading Kiwanis to the Escanaba Major Boy’s Little League title in a 6-0 conquest of Anderson Tire. Jared Nordin collected three hits and Justin Wiles had two.
June 29, 2005 — Jim Brayak, Jeff Lampi and Mark Ray of Highland Golf Club and Tyler Way of Escanaba combined to win the four-man scramble at Indian Lake Golf and Country Club near Manistique with a course record 31-under-par 113. Dave Howe, Paul Schrader and Matt Smith, Jr. of Esky and Brian Robinette were runners-up at 116, edging Larry Roscioli of Indian Lake and Fred Flink, Larry Kuchinski and Jim Martell of Norway Oak Crest on a tie-breaker.
Wendy Depuydt and Lisa LaCasse shared medalist honors in the Gladstone Golf Club Women’s League at 40. They were followed by Rosie Thorsen 42, Sara Lustick 44 and Ann Davison and Diane Shea 45.
June 30, 2005 — Carrie Jensen fired a 41 in the Terrace Bluff Golf & Country Club Women’s League, followed by Betty Fleury 43, Denise Wilson 44 and Julie Mayville and Geri Nelson 45.
Swallow Inn II secured the first-half championship in the men’s Delta County Travel League, defeating Red Baron’s/Cal’s Corral 25-10 and Northern Michigan Bank 33-22. Jason Micheau finished 6-for-6, including a home run in each game.
In the opener, Swallow Inn’s Dave Winberg was 4-for-4.
Micheau was 4-for-4 in the nightcap. Jake Johnson clubbed two home runs, including a grand slam. Allen Botwright collected four hits, including a homer. Scott Creten added a pair of homers and Gary Moore had one. Justin Jackson, Brooks Bougie, Jarret Winkowski and Brian Larson homered for the Bankers.
