Sports flashback July 13-19
July 13, 1970 — Recent Menominee High School graduate Kim Agneberg earned medalist honors in the Highland Open men’s golf tournament, edging Tom Gregoire of the Escanaba Country Club in a sudden death playoff. The two leaders finished with 107 strokes, with Agneberg shooting 38 and Gregoire forcing the extra hole by hitting 34 in the last nine.
The Escanaba Cubs clinched the Waubung League title by splitting an American Legion baseball doubleheader with the Manistique Chiefs. Esky’s Al Larson fired a one-hitter and struck out 11 in a 6-1 victory in the opener. Manistique then handed the Cubs their first loss of the season in a 6-3 triumph. Tom Jenerou scattered four hits for the Chiefs, who did all their scoring in the sixth frame. Doug Howard had two hits for the Cubs.
Jerry Richer of Schaffer and Dick Peterson won feature races before a crowd of 2,729 fans at the Escanaba Speedway. Richer captured the modified feature and Peterson took the checkered flag in the sportsmen event. Richer also copped the modified trophy dash and Ken Viau won the sportsmen semi-feature and first heat.
July 15, 1970 — Jerry Cvengros was named athletic director at Escanaba High School by the Board of Education. He takes over for Harold Johnson, who served the past eight years. Cvengros also retains his position as head varsity football coach, compiling 53-13-3 record for eight seasons.
July 16, 1970 — Gloria Hansley carded a 46, to lead the way in the Escanaba Country Club Women’s League. Ruth Needham, Marilyn Knoll and Sally Fontaine hit 49.
July 17, 1970 — Despite two dunkings by a crew member, Escanaba Yacht Club sailor Doug Smith took first in the regular seagull class sailboat races. In stiff winds, his crew member Gary Hayward was also dunked when a hiking strap broke. Mike Labre and crew member Pete Strom placed second followed by Wally Zimmerman and Dick Anderson.
July 15, 1975 — Mary Dulek collected three hits, including a home run, helping Jaeger Brothers Construction post a 15-4 triumph over First National Bank & Trust Company in the Miss Softball American and Junior Miss League play. Kari Nelson and Jodi Flath also had three hits, including a triple. Patti Gregoire added a pair of doubles. Debbie Anderson was credited with the win.
July 16, 1975 — Winning pitcher Denise Porath clubbed a grand slam homer as Idle Hour Bar romped past Sub Shop 18-2 in the Women’s Softball League. Joyce Bastien added two hits and Denise Boyle took the loss.
Billy Smith fired a no-hitter as Baron’s Bar blanked Spar’s 9-0 in the men’s Escanaba Softball Association. Jim Pinar and George Peterson paced Baron’s with three hits apiece and John Baribeau ripped a two-run triple in the second inning.
Tom Gregoire set the pace in the Escanaba Country Club Men’s Twilight League, shooting an even-par 36. Dave Andrews hit 37, followed by Bill Elliott 38 and Bob Koski 39.
July 19, 1975 — Gary Greis tossed a no-hitter, leading the Escanaba Little League All-Stars past Menominee 4-0 in the Upper Peninsula tournament. Greis struck out 10 and walked four.
John Nevala scattered four hits as Gladstone edged Manistique 2-1. Nevala scored Gladstone’s first run on a single by Erv Page and Bill Pierce got the game-winner on a single by Carl Westerman in the fifth inning.
