ESCANABA — Hazy conditions and a decent wind out of the northwest added to the drama in last week’s yacht racing action.
Racing was fast and close between boats, with the two spinnaker class teams finishing less than a second apart.
Drama unfolded when the two cruising class boats Sweet Pea and Manitu, engaged in a duel to the finish line. Both teams lost themselves in the fight and ran aground on the bar right off Sand Point. Sweet Pea quickly ducked offshore to safety, but Manitu became stuck on the bottom and had to start their motor to break free, forfeiting the race.
