Sports Flashback June 15-21

  June 16, 1980 — Joel Sargent tossed a two-hitter and struck out 10 as Flat Rock captured the first-half championship in the Gladstone Senior Little League with an 8-1 baseball victory over Terrace. Dan Nault and Steve Theoret and Sargent got two hits apiece.

  June 17, 1980 — Kevin Tapani fired a two-hitter and fanned 12, leading the Escanaba Bruins past the Hancock Flames in the title contest of the Escanaba Stroh’s American Legion baseball tournament. The Bruins defeated Gladstone 8-3 in their opener and the Flames reached the championship game with an 8-1 victory over Iron Mountain Green.

  Larry’s Red Owl outlasted Credit Union 16-15 and outslugged Northern Motors 32-23 in the Gladstone Jaycettes Girls’ Little League. In the first game, Shelby Bunno ripped a grand slam home run and Rhonda Soderman pulled off a double play. Sandy Karnitz homered in the second contest, enabling Red Owl to pull into a first-place tie with Lion’s Den. Tammy Hackelman ripped a pair of grand slams for Northern Motors.

  Credit Union squeezed past Rapid River 20-19 and edged Flat Rock 9-7. Rhonda Olson drove in the game-winning run against Rapid River Jackie Thurber struck out 11 Flat Rock hitters.

  June 18, 1980 — Don Goulais, Randy Anzalone and John LeMIre hit 38 to lead the way in the Escanaba Country Club Men’s Twilight League. John Sankovitch shot 39.

  June 19, 1980 — Perronville remained unbeaten in three games in a 24-12 conquest of Spalding in the Country Girls’ Softball League. Winning pitcher Judy Petrick hit a home run and double and Lori Shiverski doubled. Michelle Vincent absorbed the loss and Kelly LaPorte had a triple.

  June 18, 1985 — The Escanaba Bruins recorded their third straight victory by defeating the Gladstone Indians 8-4. Chris Bruce and Joe Porter led the Bruins with two hits each and Steve Victorson added a two-run double in the fifth inning. Dave Ottensman picked up the victory in relief of Scott Hebert. Kelly Dementer, who relieved Ken Loper, took the loss.

  Flap Jack Shack maintained its one-game lead in the High School Girls’ Softball League with an 18-8 triumph over Kiwanis. Gretchen Aittama and Chris Juhl led the winners with three hits apiece. Julie King took the win and Jean Ammel homered for Kiwanis.

  June 19, 1985 — Baron’s Bar exploded for 16 runs in the sixth inning to overwhelm Skradski’s Bar 28-6 in the Escanaba Women’s Fastpitch League. Laurie Rogers slammed a home run and Diane Jensen went 3-for-3, helping Hope Laviolette post the victory.

  Four shooters posted perfect scores in Delta County Sportsman League trap and skeet shooting. Brian Flath and Bill Martinson shot 25 in skeet and Tom Grenfell and Vern LaPlant got 25 in trap. Becky Calderon, Lynn Hanisko and Russ and Doug Nelson and LaPlant recorded 24 in skeet and Bill Lewis hit 24 targets in trap.

  June 21, 1985 — Becky Iverson of Gladstone edged Sue Fox by one stroke for the Highland Open Women’s golf tournament championship. Iverson carded at 151 through the two-day, 36-hole event. Gloria Korbuly of Marinette placed third with 160. Carolyn Nelson of Highland Golf Club won the first flight at 176.
