Sports flashback May 4-10
May 4, 1970 — Marquette gained top honors in the Newberry Invitational track and field meet with 70 points. Rudyard was runner-up at 41, followed by Petoskey 34, Gladstone 32 and Manistique 20½.
Gladstone’s Bart Stupak won the first second of the 880-yard run in 2:11.8 and Cliff Young took the second section at 2:08.4. Jeff Schram placed second in the two-mile (10:40). Also taking second for the Braves were Bob Young in the 120 high and 180 low hurdles, Jeff Stupak (880), Dave Shanty (440) and Terry Cartwright (long jump).
Manistique’s Ken Neeson took long jump (19-11) and Duane Sundin added a first in the second section of the 440 (55.3).
May 5, 1970 — The Holy Name Crusaders won a quadrangular golf meet at the Escanaba Country Club, squeezing past the Iron Mountain Mountaineers 206-207. They were followed by Esky 225 and Kingsford 231. Holy Name’s Mickey Douglas edged Iron Mountain’s Don Carlson for medalist honors on a tie-breaker, each shooting 38.
May 6, 1970 — The Escanaba Eskymos won a triangular track meet by scoring 69½ points. They were followed by Iron Mountain 43½ and Rapid River 35. Esky’s Gary Brawley won shot put at 49-2½. Al Larson took the 880-yard run (2:10.2). Steve Gage copped the two-mile (10:56.6) and Rodney Deiter captured the 100 (10.65). Rapid River’s Jeff Boyer was a triple-winner, taking pole vault (11-0), 120 high hurdles (15.6) and 180 lows (21.4).
May 9, 1970 — The Menominee Maroons were crowned Great Northern Conference track and field champs, 64½ points. They were followed by Holy Name 56 and Esky 52. Holy Name’s Jim Dubord won the 100 (10.4) and 220 (23.5) and Esky’s Gene Timmer copped the 120 high hurdles (16.3) and 180 lows (22.1). Also taking first for Holy Name were Dan Young in shot put (49-8 1/4), Neil Odgers in the second section of the 440 (54.6) and Bob McGinn in the first section of the 880 (2:05.5).
May 5, 1975 — Tom Rivard of Wallace and Gil Grinsteiner of Stephenson paddled to victory in the Ten Mile Creek Canoe Race, covering the 15-mile course in 1:55:21 in the fiberglass division. Al and Ed Sadowski of Menominee were runners-up at 1:56:50, followed by Gary Sadowski and Scott Eickmeyer of Menominee (1:56:54).
Rick Larson of Escanaba and John Stenberg of Gladstone were winners of the aluminum division in 1:55. They were followed by Jim Groos and Rich Viau of Escanaba (2:02) and Terry Bittner of Bark River and Jerry Cole of Gladstone (2:03:05).
May 7, 1975 — The Escanaba girls won a triangular track and field meet with 89 points, followed by Iron Mountain 28 and Gladstone 17.
Nancy Gage led the Eskymos with victories in the 100-yard dash in 12 seconds and 220 (27.9). Ann VanDyke remained undefeated in shot put (34-10) as did Tina Koish and Mary Dulek in the 880 (2:36.5) and low hurdles (17.5), respectively. Also winning for the Eskymos were Renelle Meiers in the mile (6:20.4), Sharon Schultz in the 440 (1:05) and Pat Flynn in long jump (14-8).
Gladstone’s Marilyn Theoret took high jump (4-9), edging Esky’s Jean White on a tie-breaker and Iron Mountain’s Pat Williams dominated the two-mile (13:27.6).
The Gladstone boys defeated Gwinn 231-244 in dual golf meet. Gladstone’s Greg Aartila earned medalist honors with 40 and Bob Miller was runner-up at 43. Carl Tibbens was Gwinn’s leaders at 44.
May 8, 1975 — The Perkins boys earned the Central U.P. Conference track and field title with 72 points, followed by Rapid River 65 and Big Bay de Noc 52. Mark Branstrom led Perkins by defending his titles in the first heat of the 440 (56.0) and 880 (2:14.4) and adding a title in high jump (5-8). Terry Verbrigghe provided the Yellowjackets with firsts in long jump (20-6½) and the mile (4:47.4) and Mark Peters copped the second section of the 880 (2:20.3). Rapid River’s Steve Boyer set the league record in the 220 at 23.3 in preliminaries.
The Rapid River girls were crowned champions with 85 points, followed by Bark River-Harris 53 and Eben 27. Rapid River’s Debbie Larsen set the league record in the 220 (26.5) and won the 100 (12.2) and teammate Cindy Froberg captured the mile, a first-time event, at 6:15.9.
May 10, 1975 — The Menominee boys squeezed past Esky 54½-53 for the Great Northern Conference title. Ironwood placed third with 38½ points. Esky’s Kevin Holmes retained his league title in the mile (4:43.25) and Paul Peterson copped the two-mile (10:21.2). Lance Collins added a victory in high jump (6-0) and Steve Hermsen copped the 220 (23.2).
