Esky tennis falls to Marquette

MARQUETTE — It was a tough day on the courts for Escanaba boys tennis as it fell 7-1 to Marquette on Wednesday.

Escanaba picked up its only win at No. 2 singles as Connor Howes defeated Caden Laurn 6-1, 7-5.

“I think he played his best match of the year so far today,” Eskymos coach Tom Penegor said. “It’s always easier to play when the weather is nice like it was today.”

Senior Loic Fletcher moved from doubles into No. 3 singles and was defeated by Marquette’s Elan Chu 7-5, 6-1.

“We found ourselves not able to close out some very competitive matches,” Penegor said. ” I was happy with our effort and attitude. It could have been our best so far this season.”

Esky’s Caden Fulsher and Adam Prey dropped a three-set match against Conner Henry and Lucas Belkowski 6-0, 3-6, 7-6 (2).

Marquette’s Chase Thomsen picked up a win over Nick Chaillier at No. 1 singles 6-1, 6-2.

“Nick played very well against one of the best players in the UP,” Pennegor said. “He needs to work on consistency like everyone else and I hope with stronger practices and more matches, we will have a better outcome when we play them again.”
