ESCANABA — A well-rounded team effort lifted Escanaba baseball to a 4-3 win over Kingsford here Tuesday.
The Flivvers jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first inning, as Andres Finley hit a sacrifice fly to left field to bring in a run.
In the bottom of the first inning, Bryce Bichler had a lead-off single, but was caught trying to steal second. Lennox Peacock had a line drive triple to right field but Mikaden Hughes grounded out to end the inning.
The Flivvers added to their lead in the top of the third, as Jonah Doenier drew a walk and Garrett Brown singled then advanced on the sacrifice by Jack Kriegl. Finley had a two-run double to extend the Flivvers lead to 3-0.
In the bottom of the third inning, Bichler came through with his second of three hits on the day in four at bats, but Ashton Rymkos grounded out to end the Inning.
“I was ready to give it to Kingsford coming into the game,” Bichler said. “I was seeing the ball like a beach ball today. I wasn’t really thinking that much at the plate. I was just trusting my mechanics and letting myself play the game.”
The Eskymos got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning, as Hughes singled on a ground ball to center and Cannon Arnt singled on a line drive to center and Hughes scored on the throwing error. Brody Ison singled on a hard ground ball to left to score Arnt and the Eskymos cut the deficit to 3-2.
“I got to a full count with runners on the corners,” Ison said. “I was just trying to put the ball in play and that got us right back into it.”
The Eskymos tied the game in the bottom of the fifth on a RBI-double by Hughes and took the lead on a double by Nolan Bink to bring in Hughes.
“We were hitting the ball all game,” Bink said. “I just needed to get that bat on the ball and when you do that good things happen.”
The Eskymos defense played very well as they held Kingsford scoreless with only one hit over the last two innings.
“Our defense played very well today,” Eskymos coach Scott Hanson said. “Both teams made some dig plays but both teams missed one that they would like to have back but overall and great job by our guys today.”
Ashton Rymkos got the win for the Eskymos allowing three runs on four hits with six strikeouts and two walks.
“We needed this one,” Rymkos said. “Our defense played very well, the outfield made some great plays, the infield did their job and Mikaden was good behind the plate. We will most likely see them again in districts so we just have to keep doing our job.”
